100% Cotton vs. Polyester Sweatpants
When choosing a pair of sweatpants, the fabric makes a bigger difference than you might think. Cotton and polyester can look similar, but they feel, breathe, wear and perform differently.
At Respire, we chose 100% cotton terry for our Alpine Sweats because we wanted them to prioritize comfort, softness and a natural feel. But that doesn't mean cotton is automatically better for everyone. Polyester has advantages too.
Here's how the two actually compare.
How Does Cotton Feel Compared to Polyester?
Cotton generally has a softer, more natural feel against the skin. As cotton sweatpants are worn and washed, the fabric can continue to soften and develop its own broken-in feel.
Polyester is a synthetic fiber. It can be made extremely soft, but the feel depends heavily on the fabric construction and finish.
If your priority is a natural, cozy feel, cotton has a clear appeal. If your priority is lightweight performance and quick drying, polyester may make more sense.
Breathability and Moisture
Cotton absorbs moisture readily, which can make it comfortable for everyday wear, lounging and lower-intensity activity. The tradeoff is that once cotton becomes wet, it generally takes longer to dry.
Polyester absorbs much less moisture and typically dries faster. That's one reason it's so common in performance and athletic clothing.
Neither is universally better—the right choice depends on what you're using your sweatpants for.
Durability
Both fabrics can last a long time when they're made well.
Polyester generally resists shrinking and wrinkling and handles repeated exposure to moisture well. Cotton can shrink, especially when exposed to high heat, but a substantial cotton fabric can age beautifully when cared for properly.
For us, that broken-in character was actually part of the appeal.
Why We Chose 100% Cotton for the Alpine Sweats
When developing the Respire Alpine Sweats, the goal wasn't to make another pair of thin performance joggers.
We wanted the opposite.
A heavyweight, oversized pair of sweatpants you actually look forward to putting on—whether you're lounging, traveling, training or simply want to be comfortable.
That's why Alpine uses 100% cotton terry with a relaxed, baggy fit. I've personally worn my pair regularly for about a year, and that experience has reinforced why I wanted to build them this way: the fabric develops a softer, more lived-in feel rather than feeling disposable.
So, Which Is Better?
Choose cotton sweatpants if you value softness, a natural feel, comfort and that broken-in character cotton develops over time.
Choose polyester sweatpants if quick drying, wrinkle resistance and performance during sweaty activities matter more to you.
For everyday comfort, we prefer cotton—which is exactly why we built the Alpine Sweats from it.
