Gray Respire sweatpants with a question about cotton shrinkage

Do 100% Cotton Sweatpants Shrink? What You Need to Know

Do 100% Cotton Sweatpants Shrink?

Yes. 100% cotton sweatpants can shrink, especially when they're exposed to heat during washing or drying. How much they shrink depends on the fabric, how the garment was made and how you care for it.

That doesn't mean you should avoid cotton. It simply means understanding how cotton behaves can help you keep the fit you want.

At Respire, our Alpine Sweats are made from 100% cotton terry, so shrinkage is something we want customers to understand before choosing a size or washing their pair.

Why Does Cotton Shrink?

Cotton is a natural fiber. During manufacturing, those fibers experience tension as they're spun, woven or knitted into fabric and constructed into clothing.

When cotton is exposed to water and especially heat, some of that tension can relax. As the fibers and fabric structure settle, the garment can become slightly smaller.

Heat is one of the biggest factors, which is why a hot dryer can have a much greater effect on cotton than gentler washing and drying methods.

How Much Can 100% Cotton Sweatpants Shrink?

There isn't one percentage that applies to every pair of cotton sweatpants.

Shrinkage depends on the cotton fabric, construction, whether the material was pre-shrunk, washing temperature, drying temperature and how many times the garment has been washed.

That's why we don't think it's useful to promise an exact amount unless a specific garment has been tested under controlled conditions.

Instead, if maintaining the original fit matters to you, treat 100% cotton with a little more care.

Does Cotton Keep Shrinking Every Time You Wash It?

The most noticeable change generally happens during the earlier wash and dry cycles, particularly when heat is involved.

That doesn't mean your sweatpants will become dramatically smaller every time you wash them. But repeated high heat can continue to affect the fabric and may also change its feel and appearance over time.

How you care for cotton matters.

How to Reduce Shrinkage in Cotton Sweatpants

If you want to preserve the original fit as much as possible, wash your sweatpants in cold water and avoid excessive heat.

A gentle wash cycle can also reduce unnecessary stress on the fabric. When possible, air drying is the safest option for minimizing heat-related shrinkage. If you use a dryer, lower heat is generally preferable to high heat.

Always check the care instructions for the specific garment you're wearing.

What If You Actually Want a Little Shrinkage?

This is where 100% cotton can be interesting.

If an oversized cotton garment feels slightly larger than you'd like, washing and drying it may tighten the fit somewhat. But intentionally using high heat is difficult to control, so we wouldn't recommend relying on the dryer as a precise sizing tool.

It's much better to choose a size you're comfortable with from the beginning and care for it accordingly.

How This Applies to Respire Alpine Sweats

We designed the Alpine Sweats to have a relaxed, oversized and baggy fit. They're made from 100% cotton terry because we wanted a substantial, comfortable fabric that develops character as it's worn.

Because they're 100% cotton, some shrinkage can occur.

If you love the oversized fit and want to preserve as much of it as possible, be conservative with heat when washing and drying them.

I've worn my own Alpine Sweats extensively, and part of what I enjoy about cotton is how the garment changes with wear. It softens, settles and starts to feel like your pair rather than something that has to remain exactly as it came out of the package.

Are 100% Cotton Sweatpants Worth It?

If your priority is a natural feel, softness and comfortable heavyweight fabric, absolutely.

Cotton requires slightly different care than many synthetic fabrics, but that's part of the tradeoff. Polyester may resist shrinkage better, while 100% cotton offers the natural feel and broken-in character that made us choose it for Alpine.

The key isn't avoiding shrinkage at all costs. It's understanding the fabric and caring for your sweatpants according to the fit you want.
